Western Greece to Πελοπόννησος/the Peloponnese

Departing Lefkada was not the end of our driving for the day, however! In our desire to travel away from the eye of the coming storm, we headed south from Lefkada towards the Peloponnese. The forecast indicated that this region should escape the storm (incorrectly, as it turned out).

We drove for nearly 6 hours in total that Sunday, which is far more than we would ever aim to do. It’s tough on everyone. The driving was easier once we hit the mainland, however. We took the tolled motorway 180km south and then stopped for the night outside Αντίρριο/Antirrio.

245km from Desimi Beach to Porto Katsiki to Antirrio, opposite Patras on the Peloponnese

We stopped overnight just off the road outside Antirrio, at a quiet little spot. We only needed somewhere to rest our heads, before we took the Antirrio bridge over to Patras. We did not want to take that drive over the bridge in the dark!

The funny thing about parking up somewhere new in the dark is that you’re never quite sure what you’re going to find when you see the place in daylight! In this case, it was a very pleasant surprise. This was our view: a quiet little strand and the majesty of the Peloponnese, across the water:

Antirrio is situated on the northern side of the 2.4 km-wide Strait of Rio, which separates the Gulf of Patras in the west from the Gulf of Corinth in the east. We got ourselves up and fed and then we set our course to the Peloponnese!
