World History:
- Stone Age, Palaeolithic period: 2,500,000-10,000 BCE
- 10,000 BCE: Development of agriculture and the start of farming in the Middle East
- Stone Age, Mesolithic period: 10000-8000 BCE
- 8,500 BCE: Cultivation of cereal crops (wheat & barley) and the domestication of animals (sheep & goats) in the Middle East
- Stone Age, Neolithic period: 8000-3300 BCE
- 6,000 BCE: Metal-working; copper first used for tools and ornaments. Gold soon followed, mainly for ornaments, and demand for metal ores then stimulated trade
- 3,500 BCE: Sumer in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq) develops as the first known complex civilization, the Sumerians. In these cities, the earliest known form of writing, cuneiform script, appears around 3,000 BCE
- Bronze Age: 3300-1200 BCE
- 3,100 BCE: Egypt emerges as a civilization, Egypt having been home to agricultural settlements as early as 5,500 BCE
- 2,000 BCE: First Minoan palaces built in Crete
- Iron Age: 1200-500 BCE
