Back on the south coast of Crete

28 May – 4 June 2021: We just couldn’t stay away 😊

We know we have a long journey ahead of us back to Ireland and so, while we are waiting for Saul’s passport to arrive in the Irish Consular Office in Iraklio, we have opted to take a week in what looks to be a lovely campsite in Agia Galini. This small town is on the south coast of Crete but in the centre of the island. We haven’t ever stayed in this area before, so this is new ground for us.

Agia Galini was a small fishing village at one point but is now chocka full of tourist accommodation and cafés and restaurants.  We took a walk one of the days all through the streets, up the hill and down again.  To be honest, picturesque and all as some parts of it are, we wouldn’t rave about it as a holiday destination.

However, the campsite was one of our top favourite sites ever! It’s called Camping No Problem and that set the vibe for the type of establishment it was. Morgan was thoroughly tickled by the wifi password at the pool which was ‘don’t know’ 😂  The camping spaces were well spaced out and it was also not busy which, while not particularly good news for the owners, meant for us that there was a spacious feel to the place and a sense of distance and relaxation.

Our camping spot was mostly shaded by a large plane tree and before long we discovered that this same tree was home to two owls! It was after two nights of wondering what the squeaking noise every 10 seconds was, a neighbour pointed out two owls in the tree above us. He was not impressed by the gifts of dead birds and droppings left by the owls on his tent!

The campsite had a great pool which was of definite novelty value to the children, and they had two swims a day each day. We went to the beach, a five minute walk from the site, just the once. The coastline looked similar to that at Paleochora but the sea wasn’t as clear, so it didn’t have quite the same appeal. Are we getting too fussy?!

The restaurant at this site served the most incredible and generous dishes of freshly prepared Cretan food. The chef, his wife and his mother prepared the food each day and the fact that locals all gathered here on the Sunday for a huge roast was a great indication of the calibre of food served here.

And, lastly, some plants and trees. Grapes are starting to grow on the vines, pomegranates are developing from the tree blossom, and fresh, green carob pods are almost fullsize on the carob trees:
