The pink sands of Falasarna beach

The pink sands of Falasarna beach

After Olwen’s hospital check-up in Chaniá Hospital, we had the whole day ahead of us, so we hit the road west and travelled further along this road than we have ever been along before, out as far as Falasarna on the north-west coast. The west of Crete is famed for its pink-hued sands and we saw some of these on the stunning, wide, almost empty beach of Falasarna. It was reminiscent of Portugal last year, seeing wide open beaches, so used to big numbers of tourists, but yet strangely empty. The local industry’s loss was our gain, although it is heartbreaking to wonder how people are going to make ends meet, again, this year, if the tourists can’t come…

After that, it was time to crisscross back up the hairpin bends towards Platanos, and over to Kissamos to find ourselves a campsite for the night. We could have wildcamped, but needed to empty our tanks and refill with water, plus we are on the lookout for a washing machine. Greece isn’t as reliable as other countries when it comes to motorhome services stops; not only are there far fewer sites and stops, but some don’t have grey water gullies and, as yet, we haven’t come across one that has a fully functioning washing machine!
