Canterbury: travelling UK to France
29 November 2019: After leaving Richard and Maggie’s home in Arundel, we drove to Canterbury and stayed overnight at a motorhome stopover / park ‘n’ ride on the outskirts of the city. This was so that we would be fresh-faced and ready for the ferry from Dover to Calais the next day. Such a handy spot to overnight before heading for France! At the time, overnighting in this carpark cost £3 but we believe it now costs £7 for the night, incl. waste services, and a free bus-ride to and from the city:

The following morning, we had time for a quick trip into Canterbury, giving us a chance to spot the spires of beautiful Canterbury Cathedral down some picturesque narrow streets:

We were too tight to spend £33! on a quick visit to Canterbury Cathedral (built between 1070 and 1077, using stone brought over from France), spending it instead on a McDonald’s as per our children’s request, thus kicking off another research project they had decided upon for our trip – ‘McDonald’s meals: an international comparison’.
Instead, here’s a pic of Christchurch Gate to Canterbury Cathedral, a Norman gateway built in 1517:

After Canterbury, off we went to Dover for our 90 minute crossing to Calais. Here we are, parked up in lane 212 of this enormous port:
