Two nights in Biarritz
2nd – 4th December: Biarritz
After a long day’s driving, we decided to stop for a couple of days to take a break from the driving. First port of call was to find some food and where better a place for Morgan and Olwen to further their European Study of McDonald’s Restaurants than Bayonne? It was getting dark when we pulled into the carpark and we were all relieved to see a quiet and rather fancy version of McDonald’s awaiting us. They even had beer on the menu! There will be more to come on this experience in the report to be presented at a later date by the young researchers…
Once we were fed and watered, we then drove the short distance from Bayonne to Biarritz – I never knew they were so close together, a mere 8km apart. It was dark when we arrived at the aire, a small parking area near the beach. Once we had figured out how to pay the nightly fee and get the barrier to let us in, we parked up up for the night and settled down to rest.
These bins were a new installation at our site and they’re pretty common here. Segregated recycling bins, but the waste is held in huge underground containers. Here you can see here Morgan demonstrating how deep down the waste falls, from the noise it makes!
It was cold but very beautiful in Biarritz.
Air temperature was around 4° … but the sea temperature was 17°! So, we did what any sensible person would do, grabbed the togs and towels and went for a swim. It was glorious! The locals, out for bracing winter walks, thought we were mad. I got stopped and asked if we were Norwegian 😂

Some pics from that evening – no filters, just a beautiful sunset.

After our two nights in Biarritz, we drove another 500km down as far as Madrid.
