Fledgling storks take to the sky
Update on the Silves storks! The fledglings are really quite large now and are to be seen perching up on the sides of their nests. It has been exciting to watch. The young birds have black beaks and at this stage they are not far off the size of their parents, and so beak colour is how we tell them apart from their parents.
This morning at around 11am, we watched in amazement as several dozen storks, both young and adult, took to the sky above us. The whole campsite gazed up at the sight – perhaps 50 storks gracefully gliding in large circles, rising up on the thermals, until they were so high up we could no longer see them. Sian, the site manager, explained that this is called The Show and happens daily from now on. It was spectacular.
