LX Factory with Sammy & Brian

LX Factory with Sammy & Brian

7th March 2020: Always a special treat to meet up with friends from home! We spent a lovely afternoon with Sammy and Brian in the LX Factory, another rejuvenated area of Lisbon.

Once an industrial factory, now it is full of bars, small shops, cafés, design houses…nothing like having a local to show you the best spots!

LX Factory is located right under one of Lisbon’s two major bridges over the Tejo; this bridge is called Ponte de 25 de Abril and was opened in 1966. 25th April is ‘Freedom Day’, a national holiday in Portugal, commemorating the coup of 25th April 1974 and Portugal’s first free elections on the same date the following year.

Ornately decorated public toilets: who says functional can’t be beautiful?

Sammy treated us to brigadeiros, similar to truffles, I’d say. Definitely delicious!

At a rooftop bar, the Rio Maravilha, after climbing four storeys through a disused factory building. The locals always know the cool spots!

This colourful sculpture is of a woman facing over towards the 82m-tall Santuário de Cristo Rei, Christ the King (inspired by Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro) which stands on the opposite side of the river. You can just about make out Santuário de Cristo Rei, in that photo, between the female statue and the bridge.

Santuário de Cristo Rei across the river – not my pic as I don’t have a drone!

The monument was inaugurated in 1959. Its base was designed by architect António Lino in the form of a gate, while the statue was designed by sculptor Francisco Franco de Sousa.

The rooftop bar we were in overlooked another bar which was built by linking double decker buses and storage containers together! Very cool, if you can zoom in.
