Ayemonte for a haircut, next stop Portugal
Ayemonte is the town on the Spanish side of the border between Portugal and Spain and we stopped here for a few hours before crossing over into Portugal.
There’s a pretty little marina here and, of course, many birds of interest.
in the distance you can see the bridge over the Guadiana to Portugal
Caitríona: The final bit of news from Andalucía was on the haircut front! Growing tired of grey roots and with no access to as much as a hairdryer on the road,

I went from this

To this
I went into a random hairdressers armed only with a photo of Jamie Lee Curtis on my phone 🤣 I have barely any Spanish and the hairdresser had zero English, but it was perfectly clear that she was checking several times was I absolutely certain? Cut it *all* off? And, how brave I was! … and then the other hairdresser, with two students, began discussing what happens when your hair is turning grey and then you dye it, but in the sun it can go orange…and, look, now she is getting it all cut off, all in one go! And the two young students then came over to watch, and we all laughed as the clumps fell to the floor – it was so much fun!
The biggest surprise of all was that the haircut cost €14 😮 I thought the lady had said €40. But when I was getting the €20 notes from my purse, she made it clear that I had got it wrong. So my next assumption was, if it wasn’t €40, that it must be €140 which I thought was a bit steep, in fairness… She laughed out loud when I went to pull two €50’s out of the purse! I never fell over when I realised it was only €14!
This was our last day in Spain. Among Ayamonte’s other buildings was the residence of a presumably drunken elephant:

From Ayemonte, we could see over the Guadiana river to the castle and fort of Castro Marim in Portugal. This was to be our first stop on in our journey into the Algarve.
